Koen van Tilborg (2006) is now in his first year of VWO highschool. He thinks harp is a very beautiful instrument, because you can do a lot with it. Koen first heard the harp when he was 5 years old, on an open day at the music school at ‘Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij’ in Gouda. He was determined to learn how to play the harp and he still enjoys it. He takes lessons from Jaike Bakker in Gouda, practices at home every day and plays different types of music. One of his favorite composers is Bernard Andrès, who wrote a lot of music especially for the harp. Koen also plays harp with the Symphonic orchestra of the Gouda music school; he played with Sabien Canton in a large harp ensemble (‘the’ Harpologie-orchestra’) performing the pieces ‘Dromen’ and’ De Notenkraker’, during the Dutch Harp festival in 2016 and 2018. In that period he also participated in a project with Inge Frimout-Hei in the ‘Blue Planet Harp Ensemble’.
In 2018 Koen won a second prize in his age category at the Rosa Spier Harp competition. With this he earned a masterclass with Alex Bonnet. This year Koen also became overall winner of the Maassluise Muziekweek 2018. In 2018 he also participated in the KCC (Royal Concertgebouw Competition 2018). Koen won the Incentive Award. That was great fun, because he was allowed to spend a day with Petra van der Heide, harpist in the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He attended the orchestra rehearsal and was given a tour of the entire Concertgebouw. This year he switched from a folk harp to a real pedal harp. In addition to the harp (and football!) Koen also likes a lot of other types of music. He is very interested in DJ music from, for example, Martin Garrix and Alan Walker.
