International Harp Friends Meeting

Dear harpthusiast,

Our first lustrum is a fact: the 5th edition of the int. Harp Friends Meeting will take place this year!
With this edition we go back to our roots: 3 days full of good harp activities. As special guests we have Clotilde Trouillaud from Brittany, Russian harpist Sasha Boldachev and the American/Scottish Cheyenne Brown. They will all teach workshops and play concert by which we can learn many things about music styles that aren’t common in the Netherlands.
That the Netherlands has many a good harpist to offer we will show by two beautiful concerts and workshops by Dutch harpists. Special Duo Jørgensen – de Leuw will play a concert with theremin and harp, Anouk Platenkamp will teach workshops and play a concert with Nederfolk, Janne- Minke Nijp will teach a swinging pop music workshop and Inge Frimout will take her ensemble workshop on a spacewalk.
The much loved sessions in which teachers and participants of meet up to play together are still part of the program.

Salvi and Lyon & Healy will offer us a beautiful exhibition of pedal and lever harps, but on top of that they also offer us a special gift for our 5 year anniversary: a free concert for all participants (of this and previous editions) of the Harp Friends Meeting! Afterwards we will toast our anniversary together.

Last year we noticed that we need some help to keep the festival running smoothly, that is why this year we have some volunteers to introduce: Annemarie van Veen, Mariëlle Schreurs, Marije Vijselaar and Pedro Henriques da Costa. We are very happy to have them join our team.

In short, we are looking forward to a weekend of fun and harps.
See you then!

Jeanette & Anouk

Information workshops:

Workshop 1 Breton music – Clotilde Trouillaud – gentle intermediate
In this workshop you’ll be working with a recording of a traditional melody. You will learn to play the melody on the harp. Clotilde will be giving you ideas on how to arrange the melody. You will be working with different styles of traditional music.
The workshop is by ear, but participants will get sheet music to take home afterwards.

Workshop 2 Nederfolk! Sing along edition - Anouk Platenkamp – intermediate/advanced
The Netherlands has its own traditional music! Both songs and tunes are very well suited to play on the harp. In this workshop we will explore the music of the Netherlands, taught by you in a modern style with fresh new arrangement. The workshop is aimed at repertoire that can be sung, especially suited for elderly who might know the songs from their youth. However, these songs can also be played as individual pieces for the non-Dutch speakers.
After the workshop you will never be empty handed when someone asks you: “do you play any Dutch tunes?”

Workshop 3 Composing in traditional style - Clotilde Trouillaud – intermediate/advanced
In deze workshop Clotilde will teach her own compositions, imspired by traditional music, or not! You will be looking at the composing-proces, composing with a specific form in mind or working from a free improvisation.

Workshop 4 Delta Harp – Sasha Boldachev – gentle intermediate

Workshop 5 Therapeutic harp music – Anouk Platenkamp – all levels
An introduction to playing therapeutic music on the harp. In this workshop participants will experience the different modes used to stir a feeling in the listener. Participants will learn the basis of improvising in these modes. Anouk will also share her own experiences of playing therapeutic music for a variaty of audiences and share some of the tips and tricks she learn in her many years of experience.

Workshop 6 Spacewalk – Inge Frimout – ensemble workshop
Put on your space suit, take you harp and come along on this space journey to the planets in our solar system with Inge Frimout-Hei. You will study the pieces of “Planetary Impressions” beforehand.
Together we will start exploring: how do you play the music of Jupiter and Uranus? How do you put all your feelings in playing Venus and Mars?
In the end a rousing Solar System Finale!
The price of the book “Planetary Impressions" is included in the workshop price. It also contains special extra parts for ensemble in different levels of ability.
At the end of the workshop day we will give a concert so all your fans can come and listen.

Workshop 7 Breton music in an ensemble – Clotilde Trouillaud – gentle intermediate
From a traditional Breton melody you will be working on making an arrangement for multiple harps. How to divide the parts; with melody, 2nd melody and rhythmical part… We will work on how to make an arrangement come together, making choices between the various ideas and leaving room for improvisation.

Workshop 8 Improvisation – Sasha Boldachev – intermediate/advanced
It's partly composition and theory, partly fun and expression. We will try different effects, combine them together, learn how to set the square to improvise and try to do it together.

Workshop 9 Pop music – Janne-Minke Nijp – gentle intermediate
Have you always had the desire to play pop music on you harp, or do you just want some variation on playing Celtic or Classical music? This workshop pop harp will give you exactly what you are looking for.
During the workshop we will learn two pop songs by ear, with chords. You are welcome to make notes, so don’t worry about trying to memorise everything. The songs will be taught on different levels, so you can play along even as a beginner and it can still be exciting for the more advanced players. You will also learn to play chords on the harp, because the harp is one of the easiest instruments to play chords on!

Workshop 10 Scottish music – Cheyenne Brown – gentle intermediate
A couple tunes from Scotland will be taught by ear. Beautiful slow airs, together with fingers flying in jigs and reels, will leave the participants with a wonderful addition to their repertoire. Arrangements will be taught in layers, so more advanced players can add more, and more beginner players can stick with one hand. Learning by ear in the traditional Scottish style enables the tune to go quicker to muscle memory, making a challenging but rewarding alternative to sight-reading! Sheet music provided at the end of the session, and recording devices welcome.

Workshop 11 Breton traditional music – Clotilde Trouillaud – intermediate/advanced
From audio recordings in the collecting, the work will focus on listening, analysing, singing, dancing, and of course how to adapt this tunes to the harp and how to support and harmonize these themes.
Work around different styles (march, melody, dance). We'll work by ear and I’ll give the scores at the end of the workshop. Ideally, students can record songs in class.

Masterclass van Sasha Boldachev (for pedal harp)
This masterclass will focus on technique (both Russian and French), musicality, relaxation, preparation of the muscles and posture. The masterclass is meant for anyone playing standard performance repertoire for the pedal harp (Spohr, Paris-Alvars, Renie, Grandjany) or arrangements.

Clotilde Trouillaud

Started playin the harp at the age of 8 and has been playing Breton traditional music on the Celtic harp for all her life. She graduated from the conservatory with Celtic harp. Her love for Breton folk music goes deep and has been the source of many a great recording, both solo and with her harp trio Fileuses de Nuit.
Apart from her cd’s Clotilde also wrote a book together with Aurore Bréger, teaching Breton music for the lever harp.
Although traditional Breton music consists of many repeats, these repeats are never played the same way twice. Subtle variations in rhythm and form are a source of inspiration to Clotilde. In her workshops she will be working with Breton traditional music and making your own arrangements. She is a well loved teacher and has taught at many festivals in Europe, including the Rencontre de la Harpe Celtique (Dinan, FR) and the Edinburgh International Harp Festival, the Dutch scoop will be for the Harp Friends Meeting!

Anouk Platenkamp

started playing the harp at the age of 10 and studied classical harp at the conservatory of Maastricht. Her interest in harp and harp music was much wider than only classical music, so she also started learning about Jazz Harp and Celtic harp.
She has many years of experience playing for people with disabilities, which started when she got asked to play for people with Alzheimer’s at the age of 12. It got her interested in the therapeutical abilities of harp music. In 2009 she finished the International Harp Therapy Program, after which she started the first Dutch course on therapeutic harp music.
Apart from playing therapeutic music, Anouk likes to play folk music. She does so with her duo Plaisir d’amour (with violinist Jos Koning) and as a soloist. The last few years she has turned her attention to Dutch traditional music. The Netherlands has a rich tradition where it comes to music, even though this tradition is largely un-known to the general public. Her mission is to spread the Dutch music.
Anouk teaches workshops all over Europe, a.o. at the Edinburgh International Harp Festival and the Herfentreffen (GE) and has a thriving harp studio where she teaches both kids and adults.

In addition to regular teaching locally and abroad, she works with several different bands including the Bluegrass/Scottish fusion North Atlantic Project, the world music collaboration Homebound (2016 release Adroneline), and in duo with fiddler Tory Dugan (2016 release Road Soda). Cheyenne’s solo album, Parallel Latitudes, has been critically acclaimed as "creative and atmospheric modern use of the harp" (Living Tradition).

Duo Jørgensen - de Leuw

Two special musical instruments with each a spectacular appearance: harp and theremin. Renske de Leuw and Thorwald Jørgensen discovered how well these instruments fit together when they have a recital together in 2012.
They had known eachother before that: as players of the Zeeuws Orchestra the worked together as collegues for years. As duo the explore the many sound possibilities of the harp and the theremin, how both instruments can enrich eachothers sound. With this broad scale of possibilities Renske and Thorwald are working on a varied repertoire, made up of arrangements of well-known pieces and new compostions made especially for the duo. One of those new composition was written by Russian composer Andrew Popov.
Through improvisation the duo looks for new colours and sounds which lead to new compositions for harp and theremin. In the short time these two musicans have been playing together they have already had many highlights to report. They played during a gala for the Russian ambassador during the Russia-Netherlands year and gave a performance during the Haagse Festival Classique.
